DSL (Eng. Digital Subscriber Loop) - a digital subscriber loop, the family of broadband access to the Internet technology. The standard data reception speed fluctuates between128 Kbps up to 24,000 Kbps, depending on the applied DSL technology and its level. For ADSL technology, the speed of dispatching data is lower than its speed of data reception, but symmetrical to SDLS. Joseph W.Lechleitter, inventor of DSL modem and employer of Bellcore, demonstrated the construction projects of such devices in the 80s.

The local terminal of the Public Switched Telephone Network was primarily designed for voice communication and signaling - for the oldest, basic POTS services; the notion of data communication was unknown at that time. Due to economical reasons, the telephone system sends the audio signal nominally between the frequencies of 300 and 3,400 Hz, which are consistent with the range required for human voice so that it can be clearly understood. Services using Dial-up modems are limited by POTS channel capacity.

Within the local telephone exchanges, the speech is discretized to 64 kbit/s of the data stream in the form of an 8-bit signal using sampling frequency 8,000 Hz, because according to Nyquist`s theory, each signal over 4,000 Hz is not let through a telephone net.

The local terminal connecting the telephone exchange to majority of the subscribers, is capable of sending frequencies higher than POTS`s limit of 3.4 kHz. The limit cannot be higher than that depending on the quality and distance of the terminal. DSL technology uses the higher, unused band of the terminal by creating 4312.5 Hz, broad channels starting at - 10 and 100 kHz - depending on the configuration of the system. The channel allocation is continued upon higher and higher frequencies (up to 1.1 MHz for ADSL) until the new channels are recognized as unfit for usage. Each channel is extended so that it is can be used on more than one route, as in case of POTS connections. More of the usable channels is compared to greater available bands and that is why the distance and quality of the line are crucial factors. The number of channels fit for usage is divided into two groups of movement streams - of reception and of dispatch - based on the initially configured proportions. In the given group individual channels are joined into a couple of cycles, each in different direction. Just like analogue modems, DSL transmitters constantly monitor quality of the channels and, depending on whether the given channel is useful or not, they are added or removed.

The commercial success of DSL and similar technologies is reflected in the fact that in the last decades, as electronics is becoming faster and cheaper, the costs of digging out pits for the new wiring have remained unchangeably high. All of the DSL technologies use highly complex algorithms for converting the digital signal, overcoming the inseparable limitations of wires` strands. Recently costs of a similar installation would have been incredibly high but thanks to VLSI technology, costs of installation of DSL in the already existing local terminals, with DSLAM multiplexer on one end and a DSL modem on the other, requires a smaller amount of expenditures that could arise at the same route and distance, when installing a new optic fiber.

DSL technology is used in majority of apartments and minor offices, the proper filters enable simultaneous operation of voice services and of DSL. DSL modem can use the same subscriber`s line that the communication devices based on POTS technology use, turning faxes and analogue modems on. At the same time, only one DSL modem can use the subscriber`s line. The standard method of making DSL available to many computers in the same premises is using a router, which connects the DSL modem and local Ethernet or Wi-Fi net. The channels of dispatch and receipt streams are used to obtain connection between the subscriber and Internet services supplier.

Streamyx is a high speed and ‘always on’ Internet ceonnection with speed from 384kbps to 4.0Mbps that offers cost-saving unlimited connection at a flat monthly rate.Howeever if you encounter difficulties in accessing the network, it could be due to simple reasons that you are able to rectify on your own.

Here is a simple Streamyx connection checklist for you to go through before you call TM contact centre at 100 for assistance

- Ensure that your line has a dial tone. Check your phone cable to see if it is property plugged in.

- Ensure that your phone is in good working condition and you are able to make and receive calls.

- Ensure that your bill payment is up to date and “FA Reminder” is included in your latest bill. Otherwise your account may have been suspended due non-payment. Settle your outstanding ballance at the nearest TMpoint for reactivation of the service.

- Check your modem:
- It is switched “ON”,
- The “DSL” Light is a steadily light not blinking.
- The “LAN” light is “ON”, If not, check your LAN connection is “enabled” or you may need to replace your physicical Network Interface Card (NIC) or LAN Connection Card.

- If you still can’t access the internet, try connecting your modem directly to teh wall socket, bypassing the splitter, microfilter, router or any related equipment in between. If the DSL light becomes stable, then the problemn may be due to your internal wiring that connects to the PC.

When to call for assistance

- If there is no dial tone on your phone line.
- If your modem “DSL” light is “OFF” or blinking. Note the pop-up error number or message on your computer, if any.
- If your modem “DSL” light is stable but tehere is still no connection to the internet.

By Saul Hansell

There is a constant refrain that the United States is falling behind in broadband, as if the speed of Internet service in Seoul represents a new Sputnik that is a challenge to national security.

It’s certainly true that in some countries, like South Korea, far more homes have broadband connections than in the United States. And the speeds in some countries are far higher than is typical here.

But there are many ways to measure the bandwidth wealth of nations. At the Columbia/Georgetown seminar on the broadband stimulus yesterday, I heard Leonard Waverman, the dean of the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary, describe a measure he developed called the “Connectivity Scorecard.” It’s meant to compare countries on the extent that consumers, businesses and government put communication technology to economically productive use.

Even after deducting the untold unproductive hours spent on Facebook and YouTube, the United States comes out on top in Mr. Waverman’s ranking of 25 developed countries. The biggest reason is that business in the United States has made extensive use of computers and the Internet and it has a technically skilled workforce.

“Korea has great broadband to the house, but businesses in Korea don’t use the best networks and don’t have the skills and computing assets they need to take advantage of them,” Mr. Waverman said.

Also, as dusty as your local motor vehicle office may seem, government use of communications technology is as good in the United States as anywhere in the world, according to Mr. Waverman’s rankings.

After the United States, the ranking found that Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway rounded out the five most productive users of connectivity. Japan ranked 10, and Korea, 18.

And while wired and wireless broadband networks used by consumers lagged other countries, the United States ranked No. 1 in the world for technology use and skills by consumers. (This was measured by comparing countries on five measures: The penetration of Internet use, penetration of Internet banking, wired and wireless voice minutes per capita, SMS messages per capita, and consumer software spending.)

A separate paper based on the survey research of the Pew Internet and American Life project also undercut the idea that Americans are starving for broadband.

First of all, Pew found that 57 percent of people in the country now have access to broadband, compared to only 9 percent who have dial-up Internet access. Another 9 percent of people use the Internet at work or at a library but not at home.

That leaves 25 percent of the population that doesn’t use the Internet at all. When Pew looked at the reasons why people didn’t use broadband (combining dial-up users with those that don’t have Internet access at all), it found that by far the most common reason was that people said that going online was not relevant to their lives. Some 51 percent of people surveyed in these groups said things like they weren’t interested in the Internet or they were too busy.

The second-most common reason was money: 18 percent of the people said that the cost of broadband was too high or that they don’t have a computer. Next came usability, with 17 percent citing reasons like the Internet was too difficult to use or wasted too much time.

Rather significantly, for the debate about broadband in rural areas, only 14 percent of the people who don’t have broadband now say the reason is that they can’t get it. That represents 4.5 percent of the population. Those figures match up with statistics from the cable industry, which says it now offers broadband service to 95 percent of the homes in America.

Cycle all this back to the findings by Mr. Waverman. Since his research found that, on average, Americans have more technology skills and involvement than people in any other country, maybe the biggest reason that 39 percent of the population doesn’t have broadband is that they know what they’d get — and they don’t want it.

3G is an ITU(International Telecommunication Union) specification for the third generation (analog cellular was the first generation, digital PCS the second) of mobile communications technology.3G promises increased bandwidth up to 384 Kbps when a device is stationary or moving at pedestrian speed, 128 Kbps in a car, and 2 Mbps in fixed applications. Implemented in Europe as UMTS and CDMA2000 in North America, its goals are high-quality multimedia and advanced global roaming.

WCDMA(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access)
A 3G technology that increases data transmission rates in GSM systems by using the CDMA air interface instead of TDMA. WCDMA is based on CDMA and is the technology used in UMTS. WCDMA was adopted as a standard by the ITU under the name “IMT-2000 direct spread”. It has been selected for the third generation of mobile telephone systems in Europe, Japan and the United States.

UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunications System)
Third generation telecommunications system based on WCDMA-DS. The goal of UMTS is to enable networks that offer true global roaming and can support a wide range of voice, data and multimedia services. A new-generation technology for rapidly moving data and multimedia over wireless devices. The European implementation of the 3G wireless phone system, UMTS provides service in the 2GHz band and offers global roaming and personalized features; designed as an evolutionary system for GSM network operators, multimedia data rates offered by UMTS are: vehicular - 144 kbit/s; pedestrian 384 kbit/s; in-building 2Mb/s.

HSDPA(High-Speed DownlinkPacket Access)
HSDPA is a packet-based data service in WCDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbps (and 20 Mbps for MIMO systems) over a 5MHz bandwidth in WCDMA downlink. The high speeds of HSDPA are achieved through techniques including: 16 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation, variable error coding, and incremental redundancy.

ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
A network technology protocol based on encoding and transmitting data in relatively small cells/packets of a fixed length. Allows for high-speed transmission of video, audio and data over the same network.

ATM is a connection-oriented switching technique with very high speed and high bandwidth. The CCITT (Consultative Committee International Telephone and Telegraph) is betting on ATM’s many benefits for the future broadband network.

- Dynamic IP.
Dynamic IP : Select this option if your ISP (Internet Service Provider) provides you an IP address automatically. Cable modem providers typically use dynamic assignment of IP Address.

PPP over ATM (PPPoA)
PPP over ATM is a protocol for connecting remote hosts to the Internet over an ADSL connection by simulating an ATM connection.”
- Fixed IP

PPPoA is slightly faster than PPPoE, and I havn’t had any problems using PPPoA… So if your router/modem supports it, use it. Also note that some ISPs only support PPPoE, and if you have troubles using PPPoA you can always switch back to PPPoE it’s as simple as that

All ADSL lines use ‘ATM’ as the encapsulation between your modem and the exchange. The ATM protocol chops all data into 48 byte chunks called ‘cells’. To send an Ethernet packet over ATM, you need to chop the Ethernet frame into a string of up to 32 cells. If you send a PPP frame over ATM, the Ethernet framing is removed and only the PPP is sent but it still ends up being 32 cells max per frame.

PPPoE overheads are a little more than PPPoA. I think that the PPPoE requires about 20 - 30 bytes or so more. Because ATM cells are fixed lengths, the difference between PPPoE and PPPoA only matters if the frame that is being sent plus the overhead requires one more cell. For example, if the PPPoA frame is 720 bytes long, it can be sent in 15 cells. But the PPPoE frame would require 16 cells because the extra overhead wouldn’t fit into 15.

The PPPoE method ends up requiring perhaps 1-2% extra overhead. If you think you might notice this, change to PPPoA. But unless you peg your line to 100% utilisation for long periods, you really won’t notice any difference. The extra PPPoE overhead will just fill up the cells that were empty anyway.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Bernama) — Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) has reported disruption in its Internet services due to circuit faults on the submarine cable network linking Malaysia and Europe, and said the services would be completely restored by Dec 31.

TM said in a statement today that customers using its Internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing websites hosted in Europe and that those using other IP (Internet Protocol) services such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to Europe may also experience some service degradation.

It said the affected cables, on the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine network between Palermo in southern Italy and Alexandria in northern Egypt, were being repaired and that some of the links, meanwhile, had been re-routed to ease congestion.

During the restoration process, traffic to northern America may experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries is unaffected, it said.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select “Internet Services” or e-mail TM at help@tm.com.my regarding Internet-related problems, it added.

12. What are the differences between ADSL and SDSL?
ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. It allows you to simultaneously access the net and use the phone or fax (at the same time). SDSL stands for Symmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The difference between ADSL and SDSL is; ADSL has a different upstream and downstream data transfer rate (upstream higher than the downstream) whereas SDSL offers the customer a symmetric upstream and downstream bandwidth to the customer (eg. 1.5Mbps SDSL package offers the customer 1.5Mbps downstream speed as well as 1.5Mbps upstream speed). Technically, SDSL also does not allow voice/fax (PSTN) over the same copper.

13. What are the differences between xDSL connection and Dial-up connection?
xDSL does not dial to public switch telephone exchange, it connects the customer direct to the Internet. It is fixed to the telephone number which you provided when you apply for the service. In contrast, dial-up modem can be used at any premises to log to Internet.

14. What are the differences between xDSL technology and ISDN?
ISDN allows you to have many different digital features, such as PABX and digital fax. ISDN requires you to have a special telephone line (i.e. you have to do a new wiring) while xDSL does not (it uses the existing copper line at your premise). ISDN is a dial-up service while xDSL is a always-on connection. Also there are wide ranges of bandwidth available for xDSL (ranging from 384kbps to 4Mbps) compared to ISDN which only have limited range of bandwidth.

15. What are the differences between xDSL and Leased Line?
Leased line let users connect from point to point without sharing the channel with other Internet users and also without restrictions to the distance. Thus leased line offers a better security with the service typically ranging from 64kbps to 2Mbps. Leased line is very expensive compared to xDSL. xDSL is however easier to install at the customer premises. xDSL is categorized as best effort service while leased line is premier or guaranteed bandwidth service.

23. Will I enjoy fast speed at all times?
Streamyx download and upload speed varies and is dependant on the following factors:
• Location of website - user may experience slow response from international websites.
• Capacity of visited web server - some web servers cannot cope with huge traffic demand from users. In addition, some sites restrict download speed of their users to ensure fair level of service among them.
• Network congestion - high level of traffic at peak times causing some slowdown.
• Running other application simultaneously - using other application (e.g P2P) at the same time can degrade download performance..

24. What is a ‘contention ratio’?
To provide a cost effective service – Streamyx is ‘contended’ (shared) at the following ratios:

Package Download Speed Upload Speed Contention Ratio
Streamyx 384k 384k 128k 1:25
Streamyx 512k 512k 256k 1:25
Streamyx 1.0M 1.0M 384k 1:25
Streamyx 2.0M 2.0M 512k 1:25
Streamyx 4.0M 4.0M 512k 1:25

This contention is applied within the TM network - with other Streamyx subscribers on the same TM telephone exchange.

What this means in the ‘worst case’ is that you could be sharing a 1000 kbps connection with up to 25 other users. So if they were all using Streamyx at the same time ‘theoretically’ you would only get 40 kbps.

However, ‘in reality’ this scenario is very unlikely to happen and you should usually find it to be far faster than a dial-up connection.

Streamyx relies on individual users not making unreasonable traffic demands on the network to provide fast access speeds for all.
Remember if you are not getting the speed that you expect, it may not be due to the contention ratio only but many other factors including the capacity of the remote site you are accessing, the quality and distance of your telephone line from the local exchange.
Streamyx
384k 384k 128k 1:25
Streamyx
512k 512k 256k 1:25
Streamyx
1.0M 1.0M 384k 1:25
Streamyx
2.0M 2.0M 512k 1:25
Streamyx
4.0M 4.0M 512k 1:25

This contention is applied within the TM network -
with other Streamyx subscribers on the same TM telephone exchange.

What this means in the ‘worst case’ is that you could
be sharing a 1000 kbps connection with up to 25 other users. So if they were
all using Streamyx at the same time ‘theoretically’ you would only get 40
kbps.

However, ‘in reality’ this scenario is very unlikely
to happen and you should usually find it to be far faster than a dial-up connection.

Streamyx relies on individual users not making unreasonable
traffic demands on the network to provide fast access speeds for all.

Remember if you are not getting the speed that you
expect, it may not be due to the contention ratio only but many other factors
including the capacity of the remote site you are accessing, the quality and
distance of your telephone line from the local exchange.

25. What is Peer-to-Peer (P2P)?
Peer-to-peer is a type of Internet network allowing a group of computer users with the same networking program to connect with each other for the purposes of directly accessing files from one another’s hard drives. P2P speed of download and upload depends on customer network cloud. It will be faster if the seeders (person who share their files) are in the same local cloud as the leechers (person who download the files). Example of P2P applications that are commonly used by Internet users are Kaza & Bittorent.

Streamyx maximum download and upload speed is not guarantee for P2P or any international traffic connection. TM’s policy had restricted and enforced the P2P regulations to avoid heavy congestion for Malaysia Internet cloud. Currently P2P is consuming greater bandwidth than other normal Internet applications (e.g. web browsing) for Malaysia’s local internet cloud.

26. Why do I experience slow P2P even though there are lots of peers available?
P2P application uses a lot of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the connection speed of other users especially during peak hours. To ensure optimal broadband experience for all users, TM has imposed prioritization during peak hours that would restrict throughput for P2P application.

27. What is the different between Kilobits & Kilobytes (bits & bytes)?
In data communications, a kilobit is a thousand bits, or 1,000 bits. It’s commonly used for measuring the amount of data that is transferred in a second between two telecommunication points. Megabit per second is usually shortened to Mbps.
Normally lowercase “b” will be used to distinguish between bits (b) and bytes (B). When used as a measurement of network data transfers, or throughput, always assume the word is bits (b) first.

In Data storage, and when describing Memory size, a Kilobyte is 210, or 1024 bytes. Because of binary computer architecture and memory address boundaries, bytes are always some multiple or exponent of two. In addition 1 byte (B) is also equal to 8 bits (b).

Normally many files transfer applications use Byte (B) to measure the size of the data or files need to be transferred. Therefore during the transmission of the files it will indicates the size of the files or data being transferred as Kilobytes per second or KBps. This will translate to the network data transfers, or throughput in kbps by multiplying the data being transferred in Kilobytes per second with 8.
